Fungus on lens?

Submitted by tpwilson on Thu, 04/01/2010 - 22:28

Hi

Can anyone tell me - do Hasselblad lens get fungus on them after storage?  Do lenses get dust inside of them? If so, can fungus and dust be cleaned? Where can lenses be sent to be cleaned?

Thanks

You can indeed get fungus on all lenses, including Zeiss/Hasselblad lenses.

When still not growing on it for too log, it can be cleaned off without leaving a trace. Leave it for too long, and it will etch the surface of the glass, and leave a mark even when the fungus itself is removed.

If only on the outer lens surfaces, you can clean it yourself. If (more likely) on the inner surfaces, you need someone who really knows how to take a lens apart and put it back together again properly.

Dust between the lenses is also not impossible. If not too much of it, it will do no harm, and does not need cleaning.

Else, the same as above: you need someone who knows how to get in the lens and reassemble it properly afterwards.

Who that someone is, where to send it to depends on where you are.

Be aware that not all repair shops like things with fungus in/on them in their shops.
